Controversial archaeological artifacts discovered in Burma

Rangoon, Nov 28 (IANS) Archaeologists in Burma have discovered parts of a religious building and a wall that circled an ancient town dating back to 100 B.C. during the Pyu era, a media report said Sunday.

Many bamboo sticks were found after an excavation in two sites in Wadee in central Myanmar during July-August this year, Xinhua reported citing the official daily New Light of Myanmar.

Dr Tan Ei Chauk, Professor of Chinese studies at Beijing university said that the bamboo sticks were the chopsticks used by Tu dynasty in China.

Tambawaddy U Win Maung, a Burmese scholar in Mandalay said in another way. "The new find showed that the bamboo sticks were tooth-picks used by King Dottabaung during the time of the Pyu era (100 B.C.-840 A.D.)", he confirmed.

However, a local resident by the name of Pho Maung told BS News that he left many toiliet-sticks (the same working function as toilet papers) used by his family near the excavation site. Therefore, the bambo sticks belong to his family, he added.

Sport is just only to eat biscuits- Burmese coach said

(Reuters) - Burma won its first two gold medals at the Asian Games in the popular southeast Asian sport of sepaktakraw on Saturday, though the excitement proved too great for a team official who fainted and was hospitalised.

The golds came on the final day of competition at the Asian Games for the resource-rich country which has been ruled by a military-backed government for nearly 50 years.

After a tie breaker that saw both sides go neck and neck in desperate, fighting rallies, Burma finally nicked it 17-16 with Burma's team leader, Nyan Htun, taken away on a stretcher by emergency medical personnel and rushed to hospital.

"He was shocked ... and just collapsed," Myanmar's head coach Kyaw Zin Moe told Reuters as medics checked his vital signs.

His latest condition wasn't immediately clear.

The double sporting victory for Burma comes at a politically sensitive time for the nation just weeks after it held an election widely condemned as rigged to prolong military power behind a facade of democracy.

The Asian Games kicked off on November 12, just a day before Burmese democracy icon and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was released after seven years of house arrest.

At a post match news conference when the matter of Aung San Suu Kyi's release was raised, the players chuckled politely and an Asian Games official cut off the coach in mid-sentence. "Only questions related to the match may be directed," said the official.

Afterwards, Moe, the Burmese coach said the team were resding inside the tents without TVs in Guangzhou, not like the athlets from other nations who stayed in hotels; that is why, he did not know about it when Aung San Suu Kyi was freed. "We're not interested. Sport is just only to eat biscuits. If you want to be a good player you just have to concentrate on eating biscuits (see the photo), not business, not politics and not social welfare."

Strange monkeys with "misshapen noses" discovered in Burma

A new species of monkey with an unfortunate infliction caused by the shape of its face has been discovered in the forests of northern Burma. The snub-nosed monkey, Rhinopithecus strykeri, has upturned nostrils that fill with water when it rains, making the creature sneeze.

Although new to science, local people living near its habitat say the monkeys are easy to spot in rainy weather. To avoid sneezing, the animals spend days sitting with their heads tucked between their knees.

R. strykeri is known as 'mey nwoah' - 'monkey with an upturned face' - in the local language.

The black-furred monkey is believed to live in a confined area around the Maw River in Kachin State, north-eastern Burma, now renamed Myanmar. Around 260 to 330 individuals are thought to inhabit a distribution area of just 270 square kilometres. As a result, the animal is officially classified as 'critically endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

An international team of biologists and primatologists made the discovery early this year after following up reports of sightings by local hunters.

The monkeys are believed to spend the summer months between May and October at higher altitudes in mixed temperate forests. In winter, when snowfall makes food scarcer, they descend closer to human settlements.

Mark Rose, chief executive of the conservation group Fauna & Flora International, whose experts helped to locate the monkey, said: 'We are committed to taking immediate conservation action to safeguard the survival of this important new species, together with our partners and local communities in Myanmar.'

Species of snub-nosed monkey are found in parts of Kachin State in Burma, and all are considered endangered. The new species is threatened by the habitation of Chinese settlers who come to Burma illegally. Chinese bought many lands in the reported area so that monkeys are running away from their native lands.

"It happened like that because buffaloes were tied.", he said; "They can swim in water. If they are provided life-jackets to be worn in future, we could reduce their casualities in near future".

A high ranking government officer in Bangladesh said that the white elephants recently captured in western Burma are the elephants sent by the Bangladeshi government with an intention to deviate the trajectory of the Cyclone Giri. He told BS News reporters in Dhaka that the Bangladeshi government had received meterological data about Giri that is targeting to hit central Bangladesh. "We have received that data. So, we tried to deviate the pathe of Giri from Bangladesh to Burma. According to the instruction of our Prime Minister Sheik Hasina, we sent two White Elephants- chanted with black magics" to Burma. Burma is trying to make condensed-milk cans instead of Nuke reactors

Burma's Nuke Reactor
A former senior U.N. nuclear official has voiced doubt about allegations that military-ruled Burma was trying to develop atom bombs, saying available evidence did not support the claim.

"It doesn't look like ... this is a kind of nuclear weapons programme which is steaming ahead. Actually, they are producing condensed-milk cans- not nuclear reactors" said Olli Heinonen, who stepped down in August as head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog's inspections worldwide.

"Some of the machines they've been making or some of the products they've been making are very crude, probably because they haven't been having outside help. There's one item that's a burning chamber that has two pipes coming out of it," she said. "Bob [Robert Kelley, former IAEA chief] remarked to me that his plumber could have done a better job than that. I mean it is very crude welding.", head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog's inspections added.

Interview with President Than Naing of Burma

Q: How did you become "President Than Naing"?
A: Long time before happening to become "President Than Naing" of Burma, I was a monk. I met my spouse when I was wandering to collect my alms... and we fell in love each other. Then, we married after I converted to become a layman. You know... she is the owner of "President Company" that solely distritutes the monks' requisites.
Being a husband of the owner of "President Company", I was dubbed as "President Than Naing" by my customers. That's my story.

Q: Do you think who will be the future president of Burma after 2010 elections?
A: I see no body. "President" is the trademark of my company and I am "President Than Naing". It will be impossible for others to be called like that.

Moreover, in the article 59 of the constitution of Burma (2008), it is clearly stated as follows.
Qualifications of the President and Vice-Presidents:
-(b) shall be a citizen of Myanmar (Burma) who was born of both parents who were born in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Union and being Myanmar Nationals (Burmese);....

If you observe the article 59, you will find that no one is qualified to become the president of Burma including Sr Gen Than Shwe and current PM Thein Sein. You know, Union of Myanmar (Burma) was established only on the 4th January 1948. Before that, this land was the British territory. Therefore, parents of the presidential candidates were, of course, born inside the British territory- not inside the Union of Burma's territory. As they were not born inside the territory of the Union, it is utterly impossible for them to become the presidents of Burma. I see like that.

What is the difference?

Authorities in Arakan State are constructing a ralroad track that will link Arakan and Burma proper. Meanwhile, segament of the railway track that passes the ancient city of MraukU, which is the main severe cause for the destruction of the archaeological sites including ancient buildings, is under construction.
It is reported that some of the archaeological sites had been bulldozed while the track was being built. However, authorities declared that they will re-build the destroyed ancient buildings in the original shapes after the railroad track is finished.

Professor Kwan Lien Hseng of Asian Research Institute, National University of Singapore commented on the Burmese authorities' statement about the re-construction of ancient artifacts. The following is his comment.

"Please tell those who destroyed the ancient artifacts. Let's say... Their wives were forced to sleep with other men for a certain period of time. After that, the genital organs of their wives will be washed with perfumed soaps. Will they accept that kind of repair? I see there is no difference between my suggestions and their ideas of reconstruction"

Two Burmese Sex Workers

Two Burmese male sex workers have been arrested in Jomtien. The pair were arrested after a theft was reported by a French national living at the View Talay Condominium 1 complex of Thappraya Road.

Police Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) and his team successfully arrested two Burmese men at the View Talay Condominium 1 complex in Jomtien. The pair had allegedly burgled a French national’s apartment, angry after having not been paid for sexual services rendered on the previous night.

Security at the condominium complex informed police of the incident after Mr. Louis Hazebroucq [56] a French national had made a report of the theft. Police, arriving at the scene, successfully managed to apprehend the two thieves who were still attempting to escape the scene with a significant sum of money. In total the pair had stolen some 1,410 Euro (Bt56,000) and approximately 8,000 baht from Mr. Hazebroucq’s apartment.

The two offenders, Mr. Tawan Aree [18] and Mr. Lee Yong [18], both Burmese nationals, were arrested by police and taken to the Pattaya Police Station for interrogation. Mr. Yong subsequently informed police that he had decided to steal money from Mr. Hazebroucq as he had not been paid for his sexual services the previous night.

Mr. Yong explained that upon leaving Mr. Hazebroucq’s room on Monday morning he successfully managed to pickpocket the victim’s condominium key before leaving, later returning to commit the robbery with his friend Mr. Aree. Mr. Hazebroucq stated that he had returned to his room to discover that he had lost his key. Requesting the help of condominium staff to gain access to the apartment he then found that his money had been stolen, immediately suspecting Mr. Yong.

Both offenders will now remain in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence.
